India's Banana Productivity

Statistics

Area and production ofBanana :

Banana and plantains are grown in about 120 countries. Total annual world production is estimated at 115 million tonnes of fruits. India leads the world in banana production with an annual output of about 30 million tonnes. Other leading producers are Brazil,Ecuador,China, Philippines, Indonesia, Colombia, Guatemala, Cameron, Angola,Tanzania, Burundi etc. (Table 1)

In India banana ranks first in production and third in area among fruit crops. It accounts for 13% of the total area and 33% of the production of fruits. Thearea, production and productivity of Banana in India from 2005-06 to 2018-19 is given in Table -2. It is seen that production is increased through increased area and if crop is to be made move profitable there is need to improve productivity and quality. Production of banana is highest in Maharashtra followed by Tamil Nadu. Within India,Maharashtra has the highest productivity of about 65 metric tonnes /ha. against national averageof 35 tonnes/ha.

India’s banana productivity :

India’s banana productivity is 35 MT / ha and Maharashtra’s average productivity is 65 Mt / ha. In Jalgaon district banana growers whofollowed the Agri Search technology for nutrient management could get average productivity of 90 to 100 T / ha.Increased productivity leads to reduced cost of production per Ton of banana and thus to increase farmer’s income Agri search Technology is being extended to different areas through Agri Banana.
