1.Rhizome      Weevil

Cosmopolites sordius

After flowering.

If insect attack the crop in initial stages then crop growth is arrested, plants appear pale, Initially yellow streaks seen on leaves, In heavily infested crop the upper part of pseudo stem gets narrow, leaves become small, bunch quality affected and sometimes bunch growth is arrested.

Weed control, Corm treatment, use of Pheromone traps.

Integrated pest management. The traps prepared from longitudinal cut psuedo stems with chloro- pyriphous treatment be spread on ground.

  2. Stem Weevil


Odiporus longicollus

After flower emerged and when old leaves are dried.

Found in all banana from areas. The Larva and adult of the pest bores stem and enters inside. Plant  collapses.



Corm treatment Pheromone traps. Neem cake use.


Integrated pest management,

Nuven + Dithane M - 45 +  Orsil spraying. Injection in stem using Chloropyriphos @ 5 ml / lit.

  3. Thrips


 Thrips hawaiiensis    


June - July months more incidence.

Nymphs and adult of insect scrap the immature fruits and suck the sap, lay eggs on the fruits. Due to this fruits when mature show reddish rusty lesions.

The lesions feel rough to hands and get small cracks. If exposed to moisture fungus grow on this lesions.




Sow maize lines around banana plantation. As soon as flower is emerged, cover it with 100 gauge thick plastic bag.


Quindophos + DM - 45 + Arka Bon + Orsil spraying. Use of  yellow sticky traps.

  4. Less Wing    Bug / Tigid    Bug.


Stephatine typicus


More weeds, in rainy season.


Caterpillar and adults of this  pest reside on lower side of leaves and suck the sap. Due to this upper

leaf surface show yellowish spots. The insect attack more on old leaves of plant and then sprayed to upper leaves.






Weed control Corm treatment.


Quindphos + Arka Bon + Orsil spraying.

  5. Leaf eating   caterpillar


Spodoptera Lituwa


Rainy season

Female of the insect lay eggs on lower surface of leaf. The larva coming out of egg eat new leaves, shoots or scratch upper part of old leaves. In case of severe appearance  leaves look like sieve.



Pheromone traps, Light traps.


Cut the plants on  which insect laid eggs in bunch and destroy. Spray neon + Quniolphos + Orsil.


  6. Fruit scraping caterpillar


Tiracola plagiata,

Nodostoma subcostatam


Between August to October  more attack.

The larva is not seen but in between hands excreta seen. Young stage of larva eat protective leave on bunch. At joints of hand attached to stalk incidence is more. Scratched fruits release sticky exudate which attract fungal infection and show blackish, reddish spots.







Use 100 gauge thick Blue or white coloured  6% perforated plastic or polypropylene bag.


 Imida or Spinosad or

 Quinolphos + Carbendazim +  Orsil spray.

  7. Cut worm


Agrotis ipsilon

In rainy season, More incidence in June, July, August.

Larva hide in soil during day and in evening after dark cut roots of sapling and plants collapse.



Use only decomposed manure, Use Carbofuron as soil application during planting, corm treatment, Pheromone traps.

Pick and destroy larva, chloropyriphos drenching.






  8. Wire Worm of corm


Click Beetle, Sand wire warm.


In rainy season, June July August months more incidence.


Bores the Corms, Corms rot and plant collapse.


Neem Cake, Corm treatment. Use of granular insecticides like Carbofuron.




Collect and destroy worms, drenching with chloropyriphos.

  9. Burrowing nematode


Radofills simils.


When corms from nematode affected fields are used.


Stunted growth, yellowing of different levels on crop, drying of leaves, extended crop maturity, reduced bunch weight, poor quality fruits due to weakened roots more prone to fungal and bacterial infestation and roots rot. On root surface reddish brown stains seen, hindrances in new root formation. Reduced no of suckers etc.






In new plantation disinfection and heat therapy. Cut spoiled part of corms and give dipping for 25 minutes in 550C temperature water.  3 months after harvest plough field 2 to 4 times to reduce nematode population. Use of fully decomposed manure, poultry manure, press mud, different cakes like neem, Jatropha mustard, Castor, etc.

@ 2-3  ton / ha after mixing bio pesticides like Pacelomycis, Potchamia Clamodosporia, Trichoderma, ciride, Pseudomonas, fluorence @ 20 gm /  plant at planting and after 60 days.


At planting apply granular insecticide like Carbofuron, Use of Pacelomyces benficial fungi.
